Annulment

A process to annul a marriage has been available in Connecticut since 1877. An annulment is the dissolution of a marriage based on facts existing at the time of the marriage which render the marriage void or voidable.

The current statute lists several grounds for annulment, including:

  • marriage of certain kindred (family members);
  • marriage performed without a valid marriage license;
  • marriage performed by someone unauthorized to do so; or
  • marriage of minors.

The process is much like that of a divorce – one party must be a resident of Connecticut and the action is commenced requesting an annulment.  Financial issues and custody issues can be resolved.
